Straw bale dwelling in Kent

Client: Tony Wheeler
Design consultants: Green Building Solutions & Conker Conservation Ltd
Builder: Self-build plus;  Carpentry and joinery – Jon Banks

Key features:

  • Straw bale infill between DIY “I” beam studs
  • Home made clay plaster and render
  • Locally made high performance oak framed windows
  • Living roof

This self build straw bale dwelling Kent was self designed in partnership with Green Building Solutions and Conker Conservation Ltd. Whilst very much a client led design Green Building Solutions provided consultancy services with regard to straw bale construction, materials and detailing, general building regulation advice and SAP and U-value calculations.

Work has been progressing well through out the year and the building is virtually weather tight. The protective scaffold cover is due to come down mid January 2012. Once exposed there will be an opportunity to get new photographs. Revisit here for updates.

The first time I sat down with Mark to discuss our eco build was so exciting. I had a clear vision of what I wanted to do but no idea how to make it work. Mark’s unique combination of theoretical and practical experience of sustainable building helped to steer our design into something that not only worked technically and met all the regulations but was something that I could build myself.
