Whilst unemployment is at a all time high for young people, one local graduate’s business concept appears to be perfectly pitched.

Canterbury Tipis has launched itself as a new business providing Authentic Native American Tipis to hire in Kent. Run by graduate Amie Butler, Canterbury Tipis caters for a variety of different markets from parties and weddings to festivals and workshop spaces. A far cry from conventional marquee hire, Canterbury Tipis offers its customers something different to the conventional use of outdoor space.

“For our customers there is a keen sense to be seen as different, and our Tipis make a dramatic statement for outside events” said owner Amie Butler. When asked what influenced her decision to start the business, she replied “being a recent graduate in these tough times it appeared my only option was to create my own business and offer a service which stood out from the crowd”.

Canterbury Tipis provide various sized Tipis and offer delivery, set up, take down and event support as well as authentic furnishings and a bespoke catering service. Owner Amie Butler states “ We want to make every event memorable and special for our customers. Canterbury Tipis have been used as a space for Children’s Workshops, Fashion Shoots and for Festivals. Tipis have proven to be very popular choice”.

Westgate Community Trust are delighted to have won a Natwest CommunityForce award worth £6,000, thanks to 384 people voting for the Trust. Thanks to all of you who voted (or tried to vote!), who spread the word and who asked all your friends to vote. These funds are coming at a crucial time, just when we are starting to have to pay legal and other professional fees relating to taking over the Hall and applying for planning permission for its refurbishment.

It will make a huge difference to be able to meet these costs from the award, as it means that the funds that we have been able to raise through events, memberships and donation can be used towards the costs of refurbishment and to bridge the lack of revenue while the Hall is closed for refurbishment.

JOHN HIPPISLEY HOST OF THE CANTERBURY GHOST TOUR
APPEARS ON SATURDAY NIGHT’S BBC 1’S JOHN BISHOP’S BRITAIN!
John Hippisley’s appearance on BBC TV’s John Bishop’s Britain on Saturday 30th July 2011 at 9pm, came as a surprize to many Canterbury residents, for whilst they had seen him parading around the streets of Canterbury in his top hat and black-cloak by dark, conducting his award winning Canterbury Ghost Tour, they never expected to see him in their living room – Spooky!

Objective Productions, the London-based Production Company and brainchild of the BBC’s very popular weekend TV show ‘John Bishop’s Britain’, approached John Hippisley in March 2011, to appear in the August Line up for the BBC Saturday night peak-time show. They spotted him in un-broadcasted pilot for an Endemol Production ‘For What it’s Worth’ – the previous Christmas – in which John had appeared with Comedian Edd Burn, Presenter Richard Madely, and former model Melanie Sykes.

When asked if he was nervous about appearing on National prime time television, John shrugged his shoulders and said; “I am happy to bear my soul to strangers most Friday and Saturday night’s through the year whilst producing my popular Canterbury Ghost Tour, so the idea of appearing on a TV show did not bother me. I am very proud that I made it through to the show. During filming back in April, the Director commented; ‘that many of the interviewees end up on the cutting-room floor’ – so to have ended up on the opening credits and appeared in the show is quite an achievement.

Asked whether anybody had commented on his appearance, John beamed with pride as he explained; “Within minutes of my appearance, my Facebook page came alive with comments from my friends all over England, all saying how surprized they were to see me on National Prime-time BBC TV. Then on Monday I was in Sainsbury’s but not wearing my ghost tour garb when a stranger came up and asked me; ‘Are you the bloke who was on the telly on Saturday Night?’ – It gave me quite a feeling of pride, that I had been recognised by the public, my only regret was that I did not put an advertising banner around my top hat at the time! I have since received several phone calls from the public who want to join my tour – they do say ‘any publicity is good publicity’ ”

John’s award winning Canterbury Ghost Tour (TripAdvisor.com rated Excellent) is on, every Friday and Saturday night meeting outside Alberrys Wine bar, in St Margaret’s Street, at 8pm see www.canterburyghosttour.com for more details.
